Youtube are rolling out ‘Handles’ now for unique channel names/URLs. While I think the old /c/channelurl still works if one already had that, if you missed out and now only have the new handle, I don’t think one will get that specific URL.
On trying to add my new handle (youtube.com/@antgib) to the profile here, it didn’t work.
Are there plans to support the new Youtube handles on the website?
Hmm i do not see any (already supported by Discourse) Twitter, Instagram, Youtube channels or any Website associated in your profile yet… so maybe try this first and since it’s just an URL you wanna add it as Website or anywhere in the About me area ??
(Anyway Discourse as the used platform should at this…)
I don’t have a Twitter or Instagram account, only a Youtube one and that can’t be added because Discourse within the profile preferences expects the URL to be youtube.com/c/channelname and Google disabled setting that a few days before I hit 100 subscribers.
Hence, unless the hard-coding of a Youtube URL in ones profile is changed to support Handles, from this point on, only people that got in early enough to actually have the old style channel URL will be able to added it to the profile and have it work.
As such, it’s not really solved, outside of I guess just adding it as a normal website URL, but then no point in having a specific Youtube or Twitter or Instagram preferences setting. May as well just remove them all and add websites as need be.
Nothing we can do about that, it’s up to Discourse entirely rest assured that the forum is kept up-to-date with Discourse versions, so if support is added, it’ll be here
Ok, cool. I’ve just added Youtube as a normal website and left the specific Youtube profile setting empty. Since I don’t have any other websites I guess its as good as as anything at this stage.
Cool, thanks Bart. Since Google seem to be going this way, I suspect it will become more of an issue as time goes on. Just so far I think most that have got Handles assigned, already had a custom URL channel name, and hence didn’t really matter.
Hey Bart, just wondering if there’s been any update on this. I’ve now got a ArtStation page, so I guess ideally that should be added as a website link, but I can only really do that if I can add my Youtube handle link to the Youtube option.
A little problem with this addon is: there are predefined (discourse) cusomt_fields which are handled in the (third party) code… but if YT and AS do have two possible versions like:
…then the user have to choose the correct version like ArtStationV1 and ArtStationV2… and as you may know: users tend to choose the wrong one …(and complain afterwards ).
It also may break sometime on any discourse update… (or any URL change like on YT) So it may be more convenient to add it to the About me area so only you are responsible for this and no staff member… (Also if you have a website/ “web contact card page” the collection of your social contacts maybe be more centralizes in this…)
Yes, I’ve done that, problem is I now have a ArtStation page (www.artstation.com/antgib) which since there isn’t a specific ArtStation link option, one would put that as the website and then use the specific Youtube field for my Youtube channel.
However, as I’ve pointed out, the plugin the site is using has the Youtube link hard coded to work with the /c/channelname format. This is fine for those that already have that, but Google removed the option to set that for any new channels a few weeks ago and introduced handles, which the plugin doesn’t currently work with.
Hence, I have 2 social URL’s, both of which will only currently work in the website preferences field and you can only list one.
Now sure, totally a first world problem, but one has to start somewhere and growing ‘social’ numbers really isn’t easy. I have no idea how Blender Guru has 2.4M Youtube subs, I’d be super happy just to have 0.1% of that.
