Sword of Power

I noticed that there is some kind of Swordmageddon thing going on, so I figured I’d add to the pantheon with the coolest sword ever :grinning:

There exist quite a few variations on the sword’s design. I chose to follow the original animated television design (which was similar to, but not the same as the actual original comic design by Donald F Glut) as it was the one I was first introduced to as a kid.

The main difference is in the quillion. In Mr Glut’s design the first and third teeth of the trident-shaped quillion are separated from the blade, much like a sai or a pitchfork. You can find a good picture on page 18 of his first comic, which you can access from the VAULTS OF GRAYSKULL. This is a popular variant for both swordsmiths and cosplayers, it seems.

In contrast, the animated design had the teeth join back with the blade. The toys followed this design. (Though the comics that came with the toys, as already mentioned, did not.)

Other (weird) designs exist as well, mostly due to Netflix’s 2021 computer-animated TV show which seems to like the modern Big F***ing Sword fetish. No one ever seems to mention Dolph Lundgren’s version, which actually isn’t a bad design comparatively.

In any case, here is the original TV design:

And my version:

As you can see it isn’t a particularly small sword — it would classify as a two-handed sword by classic Medieval European standards. He-man makes it look tiny because he’s a 6 foot 2 monster.

Besides going with the non-traditional razor-sharp edges, I also decorated the ferrule with some runes :smirk:

ferrule.rendered

That’s
ᛇ ᚲᚱᛆᚠᛐᛁ ᚺᚭᚱᚺᛟᛋ

which I’m sure is a horrific rune translation of í krafti hárrhauss, which is by the power (or virtue) of GraySkull. Anyone who speaks Icelandic/Old Norse should feel free to make me feel bad about it. (And yes, I know I mixed Futhark periods. Let me know if I should have kept the RR and SS doubled, too.)

I’ll probably put the model out for free at some point, though y’all can’t judge me too bad for my horrible materials skills (or, more accurately, lack-of) — you just need to make your fixes available too. (When I do get it up I will update this topic post here.) Maybe some TV studio will use it as the One True Version of He-man’s sword someday… /end pipe dream

Well, that’s it. Hope you enjoy!

All right, as promised, here’s the blend.

MOTU-Sword-of-Power.2023-09-13.0351.blend (1.9 MB)

I spent a little time fixing the materials, including repairing the runic inscription on the ferrule:

ferrule.rendered.2

It is the same as before, except I doubled the R and S to read ᛇ ᚲᚱᛆᚠᛐᛁ ᚺᚭᚱᚱᚺᛟᛋᛋ, which is what I think it should be, and made it a proper displacement.

Enjoy!

Hey Mattel, take me, I’m yours!
