T-45d Power Armour Helmet

Hello there, figured I might as well post what I’m currently working on.

I’m slowly but surely hacking away at a 3D printable T-45d helmet from Fallout 3/NV (though on closer inspection the one in Fallout 4 is the exact same model, whether that’s lazy or the design just holds up that well isn’t for me to say).



Honestly, the design has a lot of problems, at least the way I’ve chosen to go about it. I’ve chosen to treat the in-game representation as the most canonical representation, so that’s what I’m basing it off of… and boy does it not make a lot of sense in places, the visor appears welded on as far as I can divine from the texture, so the seam along the middle would be to open the helmet like a clam shell? No. It really only covers the face and stops before reaching the top and doesn’t continue past the gas mask hole, so I guess it’s just to reinforce it? But then what’s the hinge for? What about the knob on the right (wearer’s perspective) hose? Surely that’s to unhook the hose, but then why is it missing on the other side? We could argue battle damage but there’s no indication of that either on the mesh or texture so I’m a bit unsure what the intent is, I’ll preserve it since it’s a cosplay prop and only needs to look right (not actually function). There are plenty of other minor issues as well, but I’m going to gloss over them. Suffice to say, trying to stick as close to the in-game representation as reasonably possible makes my life unnecessarily hard. But on the bright side, it’s getting to a printable stage.

Either way, if you have any suggestions on how to improve the model thus far I’m very interested, the main helmet shape needs to be remodeled but the quick block in was required for me to see how my overall progress is looking. Other than that it’s just detail stuff, like the headlamp and the rest of the tactical scope.

I was thinking of printing the lamp lens with transparent PLA (because I want the cloudiness for diffusion), I think it would look pretty neat with a decently high power LED cob behind it, though suggestions are welcome.

Especially on techniques for painting this, if it was shiny metal (e.g brushed steel or car paint) that’s easy enough, but I’ve no idea how to texture the ‘scuffed steel’ look of the in-game texture.

The goal for the first 3D printable version is no moving parts aside from the lamp being functional and the front screwcap, while it doesn’t need a filter I want to put at least a cotton one in for a more authentic feel.
