When I try to create a tree with sapling, the object menu containing the options for editing the tree parameters will disappear when the tree is deselected. These options don’t return when re-selecting the tree. How can I get these options to return or be persistent? this also happens with other add-ons.

You can save a tree as a preset so you can always replace your tree with a new one with those settings then change them.
