Texture not showing on object in UV Editing

I am doing the CG Boost course on sculpting but using my own dog object. I am in the unwrapping stage and the unwrapping is good but I cannot get the Color Grid nor the UV Grid (Grayscale) background image to show on my Object. Can anyone see something in the screen grab below that might help me figure out what I am doing wrong?

You have two empty material slots - the ones above your currently selected one without names- select them and delete them (with the - button)

I tried to delete them but I get this error window when I hit the minus(-) on each. They don’t show up under the Blender Files in the Outliner dropdown so I don’t know how to delete them.

Switch to object mode (press Tab in the 3D viewport) then delete them
