Texture paint; How do I avoid overlapping that makes areas darker in render?

I have a complex model of an animal that I am trying to paint realistically, when I paint the left side then the right side there are narrow lines at the front, back, top and bottom where the paint overlapped and doubled in strength, which at first I figured made no difference until I rendered and found those lines & patches that overlapped do appear in the rendered image! This does not look realistic.

I looked for answers in the manual & online, while experimenting with the settings, but nothing I have tried allows me to paint without image-ruining overlapping. Obviously there is a way to do this or all those amazing creations I see in these forums and other sites could not have been accomplished.

Also, how do I adjust the darkness of the paint? I set it as low as the colour palette will allow but it applies very light, unless I paint over a few times which is not easy with fine details to preserve.

A little help, please.

Show screenshot of the result you get? brush settings you use to paint with?

Will have to recreate the scene for that, I did not save it as it was only a test. However I can say that I tried every setting in the “Blend” menu (add, mix, subtract, lighten, multiply, darken, erase alpha, etc.). I will work on it more to see if it is just something simple I missed, otherwise I will see about screenshots for clarification. And I was using the “Add” setting in the “Blend” menu for my actual project.

Made a simple subdivided cube to demonstrate the texture paint result I am talking about, along with the “Brush” settings.

Good, was not sure the screenshot was going to be there but it is. I was using “Add” and made 3 strokes partially overlapping, as you can see each time the paint intensifies, and if I add a fur particle system the fur looks exactly like that. I tried every setting in the shown menu, but every one of them overlaps like this (except add/erase Alpha, not sure what that is, but it does not appear to be of help with this). I also tried each of the brush types in the menu at the top of the panel (except “clone”). When I created a new blank image for painting on I chose “Diffuse”, if that makes any difference. What am I missing?

Mix modes for the brush work like layers in photoshop or gimp - ‘Add’ will brighten your paint as it is put down, ‘Mix’ will mix with the lower color at whatever strength you have set, ‘Multiply’ will actually multiply the value underneath and darken your paint…

You should try using the ‘Fill’ tool to drop a solid color in first if that may make more sense to you, but generally painting you need to use Mix mode first to lay down color and value.

Feel free to post any other questions, happy to help if I can.

also, one does see different values usually - by default, the strength is lower that 100 % so it is going to layer each pass and add to the overall value of the paint. To avoid that, switch to full strength with the slider and turn off the pressure input so that you get a full strength paint. Also in the brush curve, you can change the way the brush lays down - I recommend checking out xrg’s videos on youtube

I knew I overlooked something simple! It was all to do with the strength & pressure input! Thanks for the help, much appreciated!

Very welcome - this community is a great asset and I have learned much from everyone here at one time or another, so passing along info is the best way to repay for the investment.
