Texture painting - layer mask is freestyling

Hello everyone,

So I thought it was a good time to go back and finish this old Anvil tutorial series. But the mask that I had used to texture paint was gone! I set up to redo it (good exercise) but for no reason that I can see, when I paint on my anvil, it paints everywhere but on the required spot!

I would love to understand this problem in order to avoid it in the future. Any help is, as usual, hugely appreciated!

I solved it by painting only on the mask unplugged from all other node except the viewer. Still don’t know why this makes a difference so if anyone has a clue I will be happy to hear!
