I got a simple cylinder here with a Diffuse Map and a Normal
Map to make it look like a length of Rope. I’ve tried about everything I could think of
to get it to look right but the Normal Map is giving me troubles. So either my textures
aren’t made right or I’m not using Blender correctly.
If anyone here wants to help and take a look I’d appreciate it.
you have not enclosed the textures in the blend-file,
but what i see from the uv-unwrap you are using,
this is not scaled down to fit into the images (both
for normal-map and colour-map).
If you are in doubt, create a simple plane and map
the images to this flat plane … and check the bump-map effect.

Tried it out on a cube in fact and it still looks kind of flat.
I’ve seen better so somethings not set right.
dont know what you are doing,
here is a blend-file with the bumpmapping to
a cube and a simple cylinder …
(the images are packed into the blendfile)
press F12 to do the render and its a bit too much bump-mapped,
only to show the effect -
the difference to Richards picture is only the added colour-map …
Thanks for the help. I think I’m just expecting it to look better then what it’s really capable of.
As long as it looks like it could be real then that’s good enough for me.
