Texturing Hard Surfaces Attempt

Well, I followed the famous Painting Hard Surfaces tutorial by Stefan-Morell (http://forums.cgsociety.org/showthread.php?f=46&t=373024&page=1&pp=15), and this is the result using Yafaray.

I need to get better at drawing scratches, and some of these should be bumped better, because they don’t show. I believe I pitted the yellow paint a little bit too much, and the video (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kZS0wYE08KY) might have not come out really good because of the Low-res of the rendering.

Anyway, first try at texturing something this complex.

The paint chipping is way to even, makes it a little annoying to look at…

There is too little grime on the checkered paint. You need more dirt near the edges, it looks too bright now, Make it more worn.

… the paint part is too messy … clean it up a bit, try reducing the chipping ??..

… and the tutorial link is awesome!! very informative … i was looking for good texturing tips!! thank you!!!

Yeah, I know it’s quite messy. The problem is that even by following the tutorial steps carefully I could not get the same results. When he says “fill the layer with paint”, he gets a less pitted result that mine. I believe it was because my scratches were bigger than the ones he used. But this is only a first try to see the results. I could not get the bump maps to work in my models until now, and that was what I wanted to obtain. Next was the use of specular maps, but I really think that I haven’t grasped how to create and use them correctly. Lastly, lighting.

I hope to have better results next time.

That’s an AMAZING tutorial, it changed my life. Keep up with the technique he puts in. Your first try was a lot better than mine.
