Blender’s node system currently prohibits any kinds of cyclic dependencies, which makes it impossible.

For cycles that may be true out of the box - but there have been workarounds before:

Secrop's Cycles "Loop" node

Secrop recently posted a python node which allows you to create iterative loops within cycles materials (e.g. one such application would be to change the scale of a texture with each iteration and overlay it back onto the original to create additional detail). Also - geonodes has just got loops, so it’s not a fundamental limitation of nodes.
