The AI CRAP is everywhere - finding good stuff became really HARD

Two (or more) years ago if I searched for some stuff on the web .. I got some sensible and useful results quite easily. The same with Youtube: there was a lot of crap (generated by humans) but it was quite easy to find (also) something good and useful.

Nowadays .. searching for something.. became quite a nightmare: 90% (or more) of the results are AI-generated-slop/crap/shit .. and getting something REALLY useful is so .. HARD.

Is there someone feeling the same or it’s just me ?

Same for me. Especially on YT. So many people who feel AI support makes them experts. Especially for something which is affordable but in fact quite complicated like Mini-CNC, Laser engraver/cutter or micro controller. Most can’t even name the relevant specs

I am feeling the same, there is so much AI generated rubbish on YouTube, but also just online in general. Recently I have been noticing more and more search results being AI or containing AI generated content.

And my Google Chrome news feed on my phone, seems to keep recommending AI generated / clickbait content.

Just stop using Chrome; it’s part of the whole “AI, YouTube, Google” machine.

Install DuckDuckGo as your browser and turn off all the “recommendation stuff” on your phone.
DuckDuckGo also has a pretty good tracking blocker built in, and besides, it’s always better to look up what you want to know yourself than to let it be recommended to you in some echo chamber. You’ll never escape this AI bubble that way

Yeah, I stopped using it a few months ago when I started seeing more and more rubbish content, I never used it to browse the web, but it used to be good for seeing local news.

On my phone I use the Vivaldi browser, and Floorp on my desktop.

You can be amazed if you add some “custom date range”.. like something before 2020 or whatever you prefer.. :winking_face_with_tongue:

Personally I don’t feel that too much, I think because I have a rather prudent approach to web browsing. I will only look at a Youtube channel if it’s recommended somewhere (here, on Lemmy, on Mastodon or in the comments of other trusted Youtube channels), and I don’t use Google or any of the big dystopian corporations anymore.

So I guess my method being somewhat conservative limits the amount of slop I have to wade through. I still see it, though. But it’s like background noise

HOWEVER. Sometimes when we go visit the sister in law she will leave a few of her children in front of the tv, which has a sort of builtin Youtube browser- and that’s when I really witness the extent of the slopification. It’s not just AI cartoons, but “Mr Beast” stuff and various other grifters, auto-dubbed in french, broadcasting unending factory-made slop.

Anyway, I digress.

Ah yeah I find it quite hard sometimes, I saw what I thought was a good reference only to find that her hair was melting into her ears, LOL!

I later found some good references on Pixabay and other platforms might want to check them out! DuckDuckGo also has an AI filter you can use as well if you use DuckDuckGo!

Good luck on your projects!

It’s a challenge to escape it. A while ago Firefox started showing these boxes complaining that it couldn’t generate an AI summary for the page I was viewing. I DIDN’T F*****G ASK IT TO! I’ve turned it off but it shouldn’t be that way. I guess the tech bros are donating to Mozilla to get people hooked while they work out the best way to link it to a subscription. Just installed Vivaldi to use instead. I have a few addons for Firefox which I hope are supported in this one.

The question which i’m asking myself then is : “Why do you think i’m too stupid too read what i have searched for or was lead there from somewhere i’m interested in ?”

In general when this “behaviour” (as service for the customers) is done i think:

“But finally i pay for this because you have to pay for this service too.. and you get the money for this partly from me.. so everything would be cheaper if you do not do those things i never ask for”.

( Like for example taking a ticket on paper (!) and wait on some counter in a supermarket.. watching the next number on several (!!) monitors in the market.. and having to do this even if nobody is on the counter.. but sometimes one comes "running" from somewhere and the client can barely understand what they want because they are breathing very heavily... no joke  )

I quite agree.

Pan Tau
Benjamin Bluemchen
Loewenzahn
Die Drei Fragezeichen
Asterix und Obelix
Wickie und die starken Maenner
And then add all the east European fantasy movies

There are so many truly well made stories for children teenagers.

Today most of the mass produced animation garbage comes out of India and then those reality kid shows like Ryan’s world or Nastya and the clones of them.

People who are irritated about AI slop should look at real world slop!!!

i agree, back in 2022 - 23, i did not have hardly any AI coming in my search results, nowdays i get quite a bit, but i learned to get what i want i gotta learn to speak in its language, using keywords like “References, Pics, or anything that can get you what you want” in 2022 i didn’t have to scroll hardly to find what i was looking for, Now days, i gotta go the Extra mile to find references or get results, im not against AI, but i don’t support it taking away creativity, When i work on my projects i only use me and my brain, i like to understand what im doing, what my animation or graphic design outcome will be, it’s control, with AI, you have no control hardly, just my honest opinion, anyways its just wording right in Google chrome, or Bing, i use bing and get less AI slop, i still get it no matter how i word it, but it makes a little difference, it’s not totally AIs fault, some AI database delete Generated Images after days, weeks, sometimes never, some of that slop contributes into its Training, and Thats when AI starts getting messy, People asking for things like “can you make a cow with a lolipop in its mouth with a fly riding the cows back” some AI databases Keep that information for training, and uh, well, it makes Slop, and also the way it spreads over Pinterest is crazy, tho its just the internet, i have no control over keeping it out, i just try to bypass it anyway possible, AI generated videos are on another level :wilted_flower:, it also contributes but thats that, If some AI databases would filter and get rid of slop, it wouldnt be that bad, but people ask for the slop, it don’t say no it makes it, and not all of it is over databases, thats just one part, theres plenty of other ways the internet is spreading it, scary how fast it spreads, but hey use some keywords and use specific wording, and dig a little, it won’t stop it but atleast i won’t see much AI

This is how I feel about anyone mad at Suno for making soulless music, as if the Pop schlock top 10 music being produced over past 50 years was all divinely inspired.

Quite true - product for the masses where often just slop they just did not call it slop.
While to be fair AI makes it a lot easier to do it today vs back then.

I had the first student this week quitting Spotify. Good choice. Consumers do have power with their walet.

Not only on another level.
As a designer AI is handy. It does some tasks very well like removing an object in an image etc.
But I am fully aware of the harm it also does by those who abuse it.
Hacking websites, producing deep fakes, historical videos with funny AI errors.

Or all those click bait videos - where lets be honest the main villain are those who watch it.
In the end those video content producers make those videos because people will watch it.
Consumers also need to be held a little accountable for that their actions have consequences.

Since I got into habit to just ban them from my feeds I don’t see that crap so much anymore and Shorts I don’t touch anyway.

The battle between USA and China does not really help - specifically for the AI.

It is a technology that doe indeed develop too fast for society to aclimate to while bad actors abuse it.

yeah that dates back to what i said, “Im not against AI” it can speed many of things up, and it is helpful, but there are people that use it in different ways, for Views comments and likes,

i hate that but thats that,

well when you have control over keeping it out thats a great thing to hear!

It works most times not always. Some here suggested not to use Chrome and it makes sense if you consider what Google is about.

Please stay on topic, if you want to talk about AI generally there’s a thread for that

Yes.. but if I need to find information about recent stuff (such as the latest blender features).. setting “before 2020” doesn’t help.. and you have to surf through that pile of AI shit, anyway.
