The Arctic Explorer - Animated Short

Hey people!

Been a while since I posted my last project. A lot of stuff has happened since then.
Anyway… I wanted to share this animation with you.

I am not an animator - or a character artist - or a rigger - or a musician - or a sound composer… You get the idea. But I wanted to create something with a story in it and to do that I had to try some new things.

For this project I decided to make a couple of limitations for myself, to drive the animation towards a stylized, simple look. One of these was to use very limited amount of textures. It was challenging, but very fun to work this way.

If you are interested in 3D printing you can download the house set up for printing at Thingiverse:

Brilliant little story. I loved what you did with the sun :slight_smile:

It’s lovely. There’s just one thing I would complain about : the voice at the end. It sounds low pitched for a kid.

You’re featured!

Edit: and now also on BlenderNation :slight_smile:

woooow, was it with cycles? how much time it took to render and how many samples

What you did with the Sun is pretty original. I liked it!

Thanks Bart
And thanks for featuring my work.

Yeah, I didn’t think of that when I made it. It doesn’t fit the character at all. - A shame. Thanks!

It was rendered on RenderStreet with cycles yes. - About 4 min pr frame. I used different sample rates for different shots. - Some were too low quality I think. From 256 to 384 samples + denoiser.

Thanks man! I am very glad you did.

@Dan80 LOL
The envelope deserves an award. It’s entrance was a scene stealer! Clever walking solution on the explorer. Was he rigged specially to hop or did you keyframe that step by step? A really great little animation :slight_smile:

Beautiful!:grinning:

Beautiful animation and story. I love what you did with the arctic sunrise and sunset and some elements are pure wizardry to me.

This is just a wonderful short. Very well planned and executed with just the right amount of camera work. Great music too!

Thank you!
Actually… he didn’t have a rig. It was just parenting and constraints. It was a quite bad way of doing it, but it worked for this short film. The jumping animation was animated with just basic loc/rot/scale keyframes on the objects.

@Chamine Thanks!

@Geromy Hahah, more like cheating than wizardry. Really appreciate it, thanks!

@ajbombadill Thank you! I acturally changed a lot of the foundational stuff mid-way-through - Camera movements that didn’t work, shots that I had planned, objects and so on. But I did plan out all the shots, camera angles and environments before I started working on the 3D stuff.
