The big Blender Sculpt Mode thread (Part 2)

Yes. Front face only isn’t meant to do that, but good to know until the bug is fixed… thank @zeauro

Thanks for the solution

It was already reported 3 months ago, when 4.0 was in Beta status, one week before release.

Julien Kaspar asked for a removal of the option, indicating that View Normal auto-masking should be more pertinent in more cases.
Then, he re-asked for a removal or a fix, one month later. But that did not happen in corrective releases.

Surely you can find someone to automate the conversion for you

A number of brush types that use flattening behavior will feel a bit more intuitive soon (from Raul).
#118699 - WIP: Fix #116458: Added decay factor for flattening brushes. - blender - Blender Projects

Technically a bugfix, but a big one that will impact a lot of workflows.

Were starting to see workflows defined by node tools. Mindblowing stuff

Not a fan of the horizontal only layout… it takes too much screen space…

Maybe you should say that on the Feedback thread…

I love it. You’re just used to vertical. But finding everything is SO much easier. They’re closer to natural eye position if you have monitor set up correctly and don’t look down. And contain much more information. I’ve been sculpting for two+ years now and can’t still find which icon for which brush on first try in vertical.

Tip: You can hover over asset shelf, Ctrl+f and type brush name for quicker find

Nice icons.

That’s not it… I always wanted a horizontal layout… remember my RCS request?

My beef is with the horizontal only layout… Depending on the screen you’re using you might want to use a vertical layout… so it should be possible to do both…

Your example makes sense because horizontal layout can fit much more icons than vertical, no need to scroll either. But with brushes, when we’re talking about having dozens and dozens of them, I’m not sure vertical can be any good. It means lot of scrolling, and vertically aligned text for catalogs like sidebar categories, which people already don’t like.

I wouldn’t be against it if its a choice, but I get why UI team doesn’t want to spend time on vertical asset shelf.

feels like using lightbox as your brush selector
i dont know how i feel about it
a popup would be more than enough for me

Glad to see the brush management system steadily progressing! Been waiting so long for this.

This is going to be the biggest improvement as I see it. It will heavily reduce individual project sizes where you no longer have so many brushes with textures saved into every .blend-file. Even the smallest projects I have can go over 100 MB just because of the appended brush textures. Can’t wait to try it out!

Selection of active catalog could be an horizontal row, and brush assets of selected catalog could be displayed in a tab of vertical toolbar.

Brush Assets visible in asset shelf is limited to lower size of thumbnails.
Zooming out in Toolbar allows to display more stuff in two rows of toolbar, than in one row of asset shelf.
But asset shelf can be expanded to take the whole space of 3D Viewport. So, it is unbeatable. It can display two dozens of rows made of 3/4 dozens of brushes.
It can easily display hundreds of them.

But default was to create a Cloth catalog made of one brush, a Painting catalog made of two brushes.
So, I would prefer brushes thumbnails to be centered instead of left aligned.

when you append brushes where do they go?
the shelf dont show it

They’re not all the brushes that will be shipped with Essentials. They’re just converted brushes from startup files. Brushes Julien made are I think around 60 or more. There are 5+ cloth brushes.

@Frozen_Death_Knight I’m not confident about this, but I think when you use brushes with images they’ll still load in your .blend file. (Not sure tho, don’t take my word for it)

Main advantage of this is that you can set up 100s of skin detail brushes if you wish, and always have them available without needing to append or upload images manually each time. That also means if you only use two out of those 100 only two images will be loaded in.

Shelf shows asset brushes. What is local brushes now can be selected from brush selector. Select brush that your custom one is based on and they’ll be in the brush selector. If you want to turn them into assets its in dropdown menu next to icon.

In future I think “local brushes” will be gone, there’s no need to have brushes that are not assets when you can manage them so well. You can duplicate brush (save as asset), delete brush (remove from assets). Basically you’ll just have your brushes. No need to think about which is local and which is asset.

But for now concept exists so that we can convert our brushes into assets.

ok, this shelf is nothing of what i was expecting
i thought it was going to be the sole place to deal with brushes, but it isnt
until they improve it, lets forget about it

Man, you really enjoy spreading negativity, huh? On every platform you’re just complaining about something. I just looked at your activity on this forum, every single comment is miserable.
