The 'fuzz' on a knitted wool material

Hi there,

I have seen a couple of things done in Blender that include woolen knitted material. It isn’t so much the weave of the wool yarn that amazes me, but rather, the fuzz that you see around the edges of the material - you can see it here on the woolen collar:

Can anybody show me how that’s done please? Is it simply fur/hair added on top of the yarn mesh, with perhaps some kind of transparency?

Probably just a hair particle system on top of the collar material. There are plenty of tutorials around dealing with cycles hair/fur.
