Oh man. That’s so good! Your UV’s are beautiful. Did you do a high poly first? To me, it seems like the cleanest character designs are the simpler looking ones.
Hi there,Thank you so much for appreciating this design! I initially sculpted the lion’s body and head, and then retopologized them. For each different mane, I had to sculpt and retopologize it separately. Throughout the process and upgrades, this has become my 21st lion model.
Wow. That’s a huge commitment. Are you going to rig the mane to some curves maybe? I seem to like it better than bones for hair. Did you use Substance Painter to texture? The light part on his rear legs hm. I don’t know. Maybe its more like the first Lion King. You just have a nice body line and then it kind of breaks up right there I really love everything else about it though. He’s so…macho. ![]()
Hi, Thank you so much for your kind words! I really appreciate it. For my next lion model, I’m planning to add a rig and AR shape keys, similar to some of my other models. Your suggestion on rigging the mane to curves is a great idea, and I will definitely consider it.
Yes, I did use Substance Painter for texturing, especially for its meshmap feature (High poly to lowpoly), which I find incredibly useful. As for the lighter part on the rear legs, some lion references do show color variations in those areas.
Thanks again for your valuable feedback!
I featured you on BlenderNation, have a great weekend!

You’re right about the lighter underbelly of real lions, especially African lions. I didn’t know that—very cool! It’s also interesting how lion cubs are born with spots for camouflage, which fade as they grow older. I’m sure you know more about this than I or anyone else reading.
Score: You—21 lions. Me—0 lions. ![]()
Art is about perspective. It’s your narrative of what lions are. We draw inspiration from the real world to create something uniquely our own. 22 lions will be a fantastic effort.
