You’re close. Yeah the hair need some work but you start to nail it.
It´s a very good work. Very promising. I think we all can say he is Matt Damon, no doubt.
I agree with ArMan: the head is too wide. I had the same problem with a sculpture I’m currently working on. And I 've realized it’s because the orthographic views can be false friends We don’t see people in orthographic view, but in perspective, so heads and bodies are thiner.
And I think there is some work ahead with the eyes. They remain still a bit “too much 3d look”. Maybe some more work on the skin around the eyes can help.
Otherwise, it is a great work, with strong shading and lighting. Keep sharing!
Your improved model looks very good–it seems like you fixed the issues I was going to mention. Looking forward to seeing a fully detailed and textured render!
By the way, it must be pretty creepy to see your own likeness modelled in 3D, don’t you think?
Hey guys! Thanks for the thoughtful comments, I meant to show an update and reply sooner but this final part of the project is kinda frustrating as it always seems closer to completion than it actually is.

Thanks man. At the highest Multires level (7) it was about 60 million tris/30 million faces, then I extracted normal map and got down to level 4 which is around 1 million tris/0.5 million faces. I could easily go to the lower levels but I did a lot of tests and this polycount gave me the best results with reasonable performance.
rybergs - Not finished yet but thanks a lot, I appreciate it!
iamdemsugar - Thanks man, you’re a true budd
ArtOfLight
Thanks for the great ideas, very helpful.
I think you have a point, I too feel there is something off about the width of the face. Also I feel a little guilty about this 80mm thing since I posted it around a bit carelessly. From what I read a value around 80 reduces distortion and gives the face a pleasing appearance but it is not some magic number for sure. I did a bunch of test renders at different focal lengths.
I’ll check the chin and as for the water under the eye, yes!, I’m aware of that phenomenon/technique and I’ll have that in the final render.
Mr. Chuan
Yes, I know what you mean. In fact I never use references in ortho view but I still run into the wide head problem; will work on it.
More work on the eyes are on the agenda. Thanks for the suggestions!
pleskinen
Thanks, working on it
Haha, maybe it’s kinda creepy lol. I personally wouldn’t mind if someone did a 3d sculpt of me but who would bother? haha

Update. Basically I decided to take a break from the face and work on the suit and background. Suit is close to done, BG is still too basic. So next I’ll work on the BG, improve the hair and try to implement some of the suggested improvements on the face.

That’s a professional looking artwork there, OP!
Awesome work Toshi. The focus, feel and also the likeness are outstanding. It really feels like looking at Matt Damon. Especially the asymmetric details in his face, that you managed to capture really well are attractie to the viewer. His hair is really messy still. Are you using interpolated children? It somehow looks a bit clumpy.
Looks nice, the scene is really coming together well. You’re really doing a great job.
That’s great some of my ideas helped You may not actually have to change the width of the head if it gets too complicated, it’s really not too noticeable with him looking off to the side like that. I was definitely wrong about the 40mm, it really does start to get distorted, but that’s pretty cool to see how the face and depth changes with them all lined up like that. That’s pretty interesting about the 80mm focal length as well; I’ll have to remember that in the future. It’s nothing to feel guilty about either, I had just had some ideas I thought I would throw out there in case they might help identify what was feeling off, but since you’re the one working on it, you would know best what you might have to change in the end Looking forward to the next update!
Wow, great job.
This has gone a long way, amazing work!
I think the iris lacks some detail, our eyes focus mostly on the eye so thats where people usually notice mistakes.
The hair can be improved as well, i’m guessing it’s still WIP so i wont comment on that yet.
Keep it up!
you got Matt Damon (sp?) down perfectly! Excellent work!
Thanks guys!
ChrisCordova - yes, the hair is a mess, I’ll be working on it next. I’m using simple interpolation now but I’ll test different possibilities. Any recommendations?
ArtOfLight - thanks again for your help, my friend! I know you have to be careful when commenting on forums but you really don’t need to worry about it in my case!
Blade113 - thanks, man!
Yanal - thank you! Yes, I’ll do some tweaks on and around the eye for the final render. Not sure if I’ll be able to get it right but I’ll try.
Anthony Forwood - Thanks! I am not sure what you mean by “sp?” so I regret that I cannot answer your question. Please clarify, as I’m curious
Worked on the background. I’ll add more detials but not a lot since the whole thing is out of focus … I guess the BG is still too bright. I think the slightly tilted light worked well so I might try to convey some feeling of destruction in the background.
Next I’ll “unmess” the hair.

I’m liking the update, the tilted light idea is great, but i’m not sure thats how it crosses over! The white bright lights are looking too bright and kind of sharp, maybe try to blur it more? Especially the tilted one that is so close to the head is taking away the focus from the character. Just my personal thoughts here!

Thanks Toshi, and you’re welcome
Thanks for the input guys!
I took Yanal’s and Chris’ advice to heart (I was having similar thoughts) and reworked the background. Also worked on the hair, which is still not exactly what I want. There are a few smaller changes on the texture and I made the head a tiny bit narrower.
So I’ll let this image “rest” for few days, then I’ll give the hair a final touch up and I may rework the eyes…

Yes, yes, yes! As you can probably tell, i am extremely happy with the bg now. It looks great in my opinion. The best it has ever been in fact by a mile! I also think that the slight change of the head shape is a improvement. And btw did you tweak the eyes without even telling us? they look AMAZING now. You are definitely going in that “unbelievably realistic”- direction now Big Kudos for you to just throw away that hard work and starting all over again. I dont think many people would have done this. Right now the biggest thing that still needs work is the hair. I will try to see if i find the experiments i did with hair while working on my caveman. There is a very nice hair material that i used which i found somewhere remote on the internet Anyways cheers and Happy Blending!
The eyes, right, I added that water build up at the lower lid, it’s subtle but it helps.
Yeah, it’s not “unbelievably realistic” yet but it’s one of my long term goals (not with this particular model).
Kudos for you to just throw away that hard work and starting all over again
You mean the eyeball? I think the eye is quite reusable so it’s worth doing right
Cheers man, I’d be interested to see your hair experiments. Hair is quite tough to get right…
You’re close man. The hair need more realism. The rest for me is done perfectly and the composition work well. Ouh ouuuuh it’s gonna be an amazing piece. Keep it up bro.
Yes, once you ToshiCG systems to better hair, this is a great close-up !!! Go on like this !!
