Are the trees CG or an image
I made the trees in blender (simple planes, though about 26GB worth) which I rendered with an alpha background. I then composited it a little, adding some more foliage by blurring and then multiplying over. The planet is actually a sphere with a cloud texture mapped to spherical projections. Then there is an orange circle in front of the sphere which has a halo. The clouds are a smoke render. This is then all composited together, borrowed some RAM from my friend for a day :), add a little colour correction, some lens distortion, and this is the final render.
