Documentation notes:
From observation, the origin of these giant crystals seems to be from otherworldly. The crystals emits a strange/unknown energy, seemingly a harmless one. It is theorized to be a catalyst of some kind.

This idea immediately reminds me of the “monolith” in 2001: A Space Odyssey. (Which is a curious movie that you may or may not actually want to see.) But it also featured “an other-worldly ‘thing’ that was suddenly ‘just there.’”
