The Sun created procedurally. How would i create the sun flares as well as the corona? Advice and types is appreciated.
For the solar flares: it looks like Sardi Pax had a tutorial about that about a year and a half ago.
The cycles particle emitter has been updated since this tutorial was released, so you’ll probably want to play around with the settings and see if you can’t come up with something better.
As for the corona, if you don’t want to do it through compositing, you can try creating a shell sphere around your sun and create a volume scatter shader. If you also mix an emission with a transparent shader with a fresnel input as the factor, you should be able to set it up so that your corona texture only masks the sun around the edges.
Andrew Kramer discussed this briefly in his star trek into darkness video. I bet a lot of those concepts would be easy to adapt for blender:
