Tips for fast cycle render

Rendering in process. It took about 20 minutes to reach 84/512 (see pic).

I use Intel(R) Core™ i5-6200U CPU @ 2.40 GHz, 64 bit OS. Last week I increased RAM from 8GB to 16GB. But Render is slow in this PC.

I wanted to buy a new PC but it will take time may be half year for me. So, For now, is there any tips or way that I can cycle render fast with this PC?

Sure especially if you render still images you can use denoiser and get clean images with very little samples.
Best is to look for recent tutorials with a list of tricks that you can use !

What GPU do you have? Usually it’s faster to render on GPU than on CPU. Also what resolution do you have? 20 minutes for 8 doughnuts seems too much which would imply there’s something wrong in your scene.

They are using a basic, old laptop, with a 10 year old CPU that only has 2 cores. Any ‘GPU’ is nothing more then a simple built in one.

Hence, there is nothing ‘wrong’ with the scene, it’s just going to take that long.

A few things can likely be done, as said, denoising, you really don’t need 512 samples for a still image.

You can also try lowering the Max Bounces under the Light Paths in Cycles.

There are a whole bunch pf other things, like Noise Threshold, etc, a Youtube search will likely bring up a number of videos.

But at the end of the day, with that hardware, there’s only so much you can do.

I don’t have GPU. I am using a laptop bought eight years ago. I understood that I need a upgrade PC for fast rendering. So, for now, as I am using my laptop, I am looking for if there are any tricks that can render fast

Ok, I have noted your points.

The performance of the hardware cannot be improved.
Adding RAM has nothing much to do with hardware performance.
It allows you to work on a more stable and larger scale.
※ If a new GPU can be installed, performance can be improved.

The trick to CPU rendering is

  1. Try a tester first to see how much you can render the appropriate image for the sample by rendering it in a small size.
The more you experience this, the more you know the approximate sample you need.

  2. Reduce the size of the rendering tile.
You can also test it with 32 or 64 and use larger tiles.

※ Tile size affects speed because not all of the entire image rendering section is at the same rendering speed, so small tile rendering is advantageous for slow CPUs.

  1. See videos related to rendering speed in YouTube videos.
It might not work because most of them are for GPUs.

However, Noise Threshold is a great option for faster rendering.
https://docs.blender.org/manual/en/latest/render/cycles/render_settings/sampling.html

※ There is also a problem that if the set sampling value is small, the rendering time is increased.
It is difficult to find an appropriate sampling value and is helpful if you are forced to use a high sampling value.

Thank you. I have learned enough tips.

Great. I will have a look at your link. Thanks @xan2622

Just to cover all options, there are addons that can also help, for example:

And it does work with CPU rendering as well.
