Tips or tutorial on how to replicate this in blender?

Hey all,

I am playing around in blender fluids trying to accomplish an acid/lava/hot mud effect with bubble pops like in the following videos. In these videos I know the dancing lava was done in Houdini, and I can only assume that the mud one was done there as well.

Any tutorials or advice on how to accomplish this?



I assume there are animated collision objects rising out of the pool (with collition becoming disabled around the time of the eruption).
