Hi all, I just finished up this project for the BG character contest. This project really challenged me because it is only the second time I have created a character for rendering. I wanted Tony Stark to be immediately recognizable as Robert Downey Jr. and I think I came close. I enjoyed making it (Iron Man has always been a favorite of mine), and I learned a lot along the way.
Everything was done in Blender except some minor touch up in Photoshop.
Thanks to everyone who gave critiques, they definitely helped!
BA auto-sharpens the images, so click on it for the real version.
Hi Jonathan, I want you can accept some the critique constructive for your work for part of noob, and somebody that not considere himself how artist.
All composition looks great, specially the hair and armor shaders. But there is something in the head that no convinced me, the face, I see something round, and I think should have more defined facial features that make the character look tougher, and the lips dont have volume, I see very flat . I show you some quick references about what I mean:
hi Jonathan,
i gotta agree with Joseperez’s suggestions.
Also i want to point out that the Iron Man suit color is paint, the scratches should reveal the glossy metal below, right now those cracks make the suit look like some kind of red plastic and therefore give me a feeling that it can’t stand against captain America’s punch.
Looking at your model, i have a feeling that you didn’t want to change his face much during the process of creating the final model, resulting in vague and flat facial feature (correct me if i’m wrong), this is very common since 3D graphic require a lot of work and everyone is afraid of big changes, however it is a crucial part in skill improvement, so yeah, you should totally try to mess up his face

I understand about the face, and I see how it is not the most realistic. It is my second render with a face, and I will try to make it more believable in the future.

I actually set up the shader so that it would be exactly that, but unfortunately it didn’t come out looking that way. Bummer.

That’s probably true, I was totally winging the whole process. When it comes to faces I feel like I have no idea what I’m doing.
