You have an option of switching tools to work consistent with right click or left click in the Preferences.
When they are set to left click, and you right click, you get a tools menu when you right click.
When you set to right click so that “all the tools work with” right click, and you left click, the menu that you get when the preference is set to left click does not work, all the tools are now set to work with
right click per preferences and as such, do not work with left click as intended by the preference choice.
The left click/right click option is a bit of a misnomer. The UI should clarify this more.
More accurately, it’s “Split select and action on two different mouse buttons” vs “select & action with the same mouse button”.
There could be a text message below the radio button to explain this.
When using right-click select, right mouse always selects, while the left mouse button is used to execute the tool selected in the toolbar.
When using left-click select, the left mouse button both selects and executes tools, leaving the RMB menu free for contextual commands.
Why do they work differently? They do this, because left click select is optimized to be more similar to other graphics apps, and because it’s meant to be compatible with more devices, such as tablets, pen input and laptop trackpads, as well as mice.
If left-click/right click simply flipped around the mouse buttons, there would be almost no point, as it would be at least as non-standard, and it’s not very fun to paint, draw or extrude with the right mouse button, for example - it’s even weirder than right click selection.
tldr: because LMB select is targeted at device compatibility and more standard behaviour, both selection and action is performed with the same mouse button, and the other button is free to other things. This is not true for RMB select, so they work slightly differently, which we should clarify more.
Are we going to be able to use the left mouse button for draging the pointer/cursor(or what its called?) in the timeline in the future? As it is now, with right mouse button, it feels a little strange or non standard. I love left click select but this small thing with right click in the timeline is annoying.
You do know that you can still access the special menu with the W key right like always? That’s the same menu as the right click.
But really, if you are a right click guy, you should be used to this behavior. It’s not an inconsistency, it’s the difference between right and left click.
Some things are there, some things that weren’t are there. And some things have moved around.
Poke Faces used to be Alt-P. Not anymore.
Those who have never used Blender before may find it easier in some respects because of the effort to make things more consistent (left click). Those of us who have used Blender awhile, will have to adjust to the changes. Some things have certainly improved Blender. Some things will have to be relearned and will take some getting used to.
One thing, those who are right handed, used to using the left mouse button, will find it consistent.
Those who are left handed (I’m not), may find it inconsistent, in trying to do things done with the left mouse button enabled that don’t readily translate to having the right mouse button enabled.
Expecting there to be mirrored functionality, when there’s not.
Those lucky enough to be ambidextrous likely won’t care.
