it is obvious that one of the following topologies are better than the other, but how much does it matter? and why?
In this example, if you cover the head with hair, it really does not count. If it goes bald, try to retopologize, because:
Try to avoid poles (vertices with more than 4 edges) at important places! Its shading might get weird with subdivison (like a pinch). Best is to plan where to place them as you can’t really get rid of them totally. Give a try with google image search on topology + poles and you will find a bunch of advices on placing them!
