Trying to understand shadows in Blender

I am trying to understand shadows using the internal blender render engine. I have rendered the same scene in both BI and YAFRAY, the output from YAFRAY creates the shadows on the flat surface as I am hoping, but using the BI there are no shadows created on the flat surface.

The scene consists of a Terrain Mesh, the flat surface mesh and a SUN lamp as well as the two monkeys.

Any pointers to why I don’t get the shadows in BI.

Is it to do with the clipping setting on the camera?

Sun Lamps create Ray Traced shadows only. So make sure you have the Ray button selected when Rendering and that your Sub lamp has Ray Shadows turned on.

yep shadow in Sun lamp tab and Shadow and Ray in render tabs.
