Have you tried disabling compiz?
And Linux is not Unix.
He he GNU’s not Unix! 
-I can never get ubuntu working right, I just upgraded to the new release now it won’t start up I get this loud BEEP!!..thats all it does!
Do you see grub(the list of OS’s) on boot?
Can you post any errors that it outputs.
