You see im trying to use a UDIM as texture, the problem is that ALL 3 objects use the SAME material linked to that one UDIM file, yet the only object working correctly is the ball on the left, the ball in the middle shows at least a testure while the cube refuse to show anything correct at all, i figured out i can fix this problem by append the objects into a new blend file and therefore re append them alter in the file i need but the one thing that drives me crazy is “why”, “why doesnt it work although it should?”
My first initial guess would be that it would all work in a single file if the textures are actually saved.
So you have Mytexture.1001.png as the first UDIM tile and then Mytexture.1002.png as the second and so on.
In theory each object has its UV’s setup and unwrapped as UDIM tiles. Tho in general UDIM’s are usually used to texture a single object, rather then trying to apply the tiles across multiple objects. If doing that may as well just single texture each object on its own and avoid UDIM’s all together.
Of course all three objects are linked to the same material, UDIM is about using different UVs (even in different dimensions) and using the same material setup for it.
As @thetony20 already said: the filename usually has to be something like described in docs.blender → manual → udims… so something like image.1002.ext or image.u1_v3.ext… so your generated image Untitled.002 may have irritated blender… Then usually you have something like:
to add tiles… an even distributing images over UV does work:
I know 3D in general is a complex subject but please don’t just say It doesn’t work… (or naming images ..crap) … there is so much info out there… even the docu is available directly under *Help → Manual, Tutorials, … *
I also recommend videos from a VFX-Pro @BlenderBob (yes he uses blender and UDIMS were invented for VFX):
which leads to the fact that the dev changed something about udim (it’s always good to learn from the pros)
And for my own shameless plug, since easy UDIM baking was only just added to Blender 3.2.
But having said that, @Okidoki is right, in my own usage of UDIM’s so far, it doesn’t take much to irritate Blender and have it half forget there should be tiles or to display them properly. So while in general UDIM’s work, there are still a few ruff edges.
So if you wanted to already use it from back then then this is ~4000 €/$ * 20 years = 80000 €/$ until now…
(Okay you might be not even born back then… wild guess)
(of course for a pro 11,- a day for two tools are peanuts… but then also for this and that and additional this one… so it will be hundreds of €/$ a day, even if you don’t work with them…)
