Unable to apply material

Please see the image below. I don’t know why the material is not being added to the text (extruded).

I am using Blender 2.8 and Kubuntu 20.04.

An associated issue is that when I use N and use single (the only way to add colour for me at the moment ), both plane and text goes by the same colour.

I would like both of them to have different colours. Any help will be great.

Your problem is that you are viewing your object in Solid mode. You need to switch to Material mode. You can do that in the upper right-hand corner of your viewport.
