Lately Ive been getting a massive interest in the 2D fields of CG. Ive got another thread up with some 2D animation, Im gonna be posting my paintings up here.
Im rocking Photoshop CS3 with a normal mouse, working on aquiring a tablet.
A little face coloring test(I drew up the outlines in Illustrator)
Heres a little speed painting I did today, just some practice. Did it in about an hour, used maybe 5 colors(used circle brushes of various sizes and opacities). An excercise in lighting and forms, as well as a focus on keeping a strong perspective.
Could use a bit of contrast perhaps. All opinions, thoughts, and critiques are totally welcome.
I completely suck at drawing, especially in photoshop. My Wacom has helped, but I still suck. I like that robot, simple, yet gets the job done. And the lighting test, I would add more to that, it has some serious potential.
Hey man, thansks so much! Im pretty happy with the robot, except for the eyes, which are far too soft.
The cavern environment Im very proud of, but I think I’ll leave it. I may develop it further in teh future, but for now Im gonna let it be.
Ugh, i hate drawing with my mouse. Dumb ball in the dumb mouse on the dumb mouse pad. Its stupid…
Awesome cave picture. I don’t like the fellas eyes, with all the circles, cuz nothing else is traced a lot over and over, ya dig?
Just noticed, on the cavern, if that is supposed to be a little rise at that first chimney thing, like a little sidewalk, I don’t think the side opposite the side closest to us should be the same color as the one closer. I think it is supposed to be darker, or same as middle color, but i can’t really tell. Still, nice pic.
@Nfollmer: Haha, exactly! Makes my mouse sketches look much mroe like hand sketches. Good luck!
@Sammaron: Mines a laser one, so its a bit easier, but I’d still rather have a tablet. Yeah, the eyes dont really fit, but hey, the colors were what the excercise was really about. And yeah, those are steps hahaha.
Hey bro, thanks! Yeah, Im thinking Im gonna get a graphire for my birthday in a couple weeks, but we’ll see!
Couple more sketches I did today…
Cannon Arm
Unfinished Glider(not likely to be finished)
Just another couple tests, pretty simple stuff, focusing on the lighting. Shapes are a little tough with a mouse, so Im doing what I can to pump up the lighting/shaing areas. I feel like those are what really gives a 2d image life, so I want all teh practice I can get.
man, you have a lotta patience, to do this with a mouse. I have a genius (brand i guess) tablet, but it goes incredibly slow on my laptop, works fine on desktop. But, its pretty big and i got it off of amazon for 80$, so if that wasn’t a good deal, don’t tell me
I prefer watercolors over digital painting, because its easier to cover up my mistakes
Your paintings look like you got them how you wanted them. Ncie job. How long are you spending on these?
Hey, thanks man. Yeah, the truth is, Im an incredibly impatient person. Once I get going though, I just dont realize the time it takes. Both of these probably took an hour to two hours. It is a lot slower with a mouse, but hey, Im thinking that’ll give me an advantage once I get a tablet.
Haha, I love watercolors too.
They come out pretty much how I want them. The perspective on the cannon arm is a little off, but overall, Im very happy.
Haha, then again, I only post the stuff that looks good, Ive got some pitiful junk too, but I keep it to myself
i just got a wacom bamboo tablet for 79 dollars. It gets the job done and is pretty good. I would recommend it if your dont want to drop a lot of money in one.
Whats up everyone? Today was the first day of my spring break, so I took the opportunity to sleep in and basicly lounge the day away. The plan was to stay away from my computer completely, and spend my time sketching outside, but I got that digital itch after lunch.
After a few failed sketches, todays image started to materialize. Its almost 3 hours of work, and Im very happy with it, except…
Perspective is living hell with a mouse. Thats pretty obvious in this image. Proportions arent super easy either, also apparent, but still…
A good use of my time I think. Im proud to Present:
Next Gen Muscle Car
Straight painting with circle brushes(mainly just black and white at varying opacities). Im trying to shy away from soft brushes and contrast/curves work, simply because Id rather get the best result straight from my painting.
Im getting better, but Im stil looking for any critques and tips you can give. I really want to get into this as a career, so I need all the help I can get. Of course, general comments are also welcome.
Thanks man! Yeah, Im probably getting an Intuos3 in a couple weeks, so that should help…
But today I decided to use some rough wires to help map out my perspective. It took forever to paint over, but it helped my get the perspective right, and that made the final result much better imo.
Claw on the Block
Pretty simple stuff, another excercise in harsh lighting… All critiques, comments, thoughts, tips, techniques, all very welcome. Thanks for looking!
