I just did one at 100% where I made a much larger island as well as duplicating his island, so 3 islands in total, and upped the particle count to 10000 on each island for a total of 900,000 instances. It rendered on my i7 14:43 and only used 923mb of memory. I didnt mess with the compositor so teh 2 smaller islands are shrouded in a thick bright cloud…
Here is a screen cap. All 3 islands used the same particle system settings.
In Render Panel / Integrator uncheck Shadows for quicker rendertime.
A 5000 x 2500 (changing the 60% to 100% too) at 100 samples using the unchecking shadow (GPU GTX 460, linux): 11min 2 sec
A 6000 x 3000 “crashes” (white render) blender with GPU (1GB my card). Anyone able to render such resolution (with GPU). And how many RAM your GPU?
which build version of blender do you use for GPU rendering on win 32bit system?
I’ve downloaded a few and every time there is no choose “device” dropdown list and I can render only on CPU…
(I have only feature set dropdown with supported and experimental but it is also CPU)
I would like to check how mine GTX 570 is doing and can’t make it do the job
EDIT: ok, nevemind I found it.
User Preferences / System / Compute Device
OMG
TIME 38 seconds…
I’ve rendered it twice cause I couldn’t believe it
I gave the island 10,000 trees cause it wasn’t looking dense enough for me at the default. Rendered 250 samples for a little over 16 minutes on a GTS 450. http://www.pasteall.org/pic/29380
My f*king God, i can’t believe the render times, and the bloody competition between @mjordan and @sparazza with render times blown my entire head away!
@bloodcr wow, is nice to see it animated! It seems i didn’t prepare it for animation, i’ll prepare another island scene larger and suitable for animation, fixing the fog and add some other crucial details to make it decent for flybys.
@Rich33584 Nice test, it help me to see the possible limits, i tested something similar and it seems that you can’t instantiate a group of instances, if we could do that we could instantiate the whole island with its trees, lets say 1 million times with the same memory you used for those tree islands, imagine one millions islands for the cost of less than 1 Gigabyte memory:eyebrowlift:!!! I can’t promise but i’ll try give it a look into the code.
Again? if you refer to the EDIT 3 I mean it too with the sentence:
Now help me understand… Why the copying took so long [BEFORE THE EDIT3]? Maybe the cpu isn’t well optimized…
And the well supported double nvidia is because now the result is acceptable, far away from full supported sli cards, but fair enough compared to the single gtx 580 configurations!
Good morning togehter,
I also try the new Blender v2.62 for windows 7 64Bit, my rig:
AMD FX-8150
2x 4GB DDR3-1866
2x Geforce GTX580 1.5GB
With openCL the programm will not react if it start to rendern, i try other driver for the GPU but it doesn´t help.
With CUDA it works, but the GPU load is not such heavy as it can.
With the CPU one Frame need 10min, with both GTX580 it complete in 1min.
Here I post some pictures: http://www.planet3dnow.de/vbulletin/showthread.php?p=4587277#post4587277
I using the stamp to show the time from each Frame.
