Urban Knife

A knife is a handy thing to have around, at work, at home, at university. But what do they get used for? Cutting paper, string and peeling oranges.
The Urban Knife may not be the toughest cutter ever, but it’s small profile is designed to handle everyday use.

So far I’ve worked on these images 5-6 hours over two days, and I can no longer see them well enough to critique them.
What looks fake? How can I improve them?

Please click and open them as the jpg compression is horrible.

Add some light

Your design is looking cool now.

More light, maybe just make the blade a little bit shinier, and the one thing that’s bothering me is the handle. It sort of looks like there is only one half of it. You might also want to change the material of the handle.

design is nice but handle looks a bit thin,
can imagine by time you have sharpened a couple of pencils it would be very uncomfortable
like the mats on handle an rivet but needs a better mat on blade, some reflection on blade an anisotropic on the sharp edge?

You should consider taking the edges and applying a slight bevel to them in order to catch the light. In reality there are never actually perfect 90 degree angles on anything, there’s always a very slight bevel to catch the light.

I have to say that without any kind of locking mechanism, or even spring tension to hold the blade open, I wouldn’t consider using such a knife.

It looks very uncomfortable to hold! I’d make the handle thicker, and maybe add a bevel modifier or something…interesting design though!

I agree with more light. I was working late at night, and didn’t notice how dim the image was until the next morning.
The handle is meant to be thin, giving the knife as smaller profile as possible. Remember that it is designed to fit easily in a pocket. I aimed for less than 4mm. I think I will beef it up a little though, as it was a bit hard to use on the first version.

As for locking, I agree that some knives need it, but as this one is so small, but it doesn’t need it. The balde is also snug enough in the handle to not need it.

Actually, this was part of the concept stage for making a real one. Here’s the two I’ve made so far:

The black knife is the first one I made. It’s handle, like you guys said, was too thin.
The red knife is the second one I made. It is 3mm thick, and works fantastically. The blade is tight-enough in the handle to not need a lock either. If I have time over the next few weeks, I’ll add the cutouts to the red one.

I’ve documented the build over at Instructables
In short: craft-knife blade and [coke can or 1mm aluminium] along with a bit of brass tube.

Admittedly these don’t look as cool as the blender models, likely because the angle at the front of a craft knife is 30 degrees rather than 45, and that just, well, dulls it somehow.

If I get some time over the next week, I’ll continue to work on the blender model, but Uni Exams are coming up soon…
