UV Bump Mapping?

I heard a post where someone said you could use UV mapping to do anything (Nor, Bump, Alpha, Spec, etc.) but after about 2 hours of wandering around blender randomly hitting buttons, I am at a loss. Someone help me, please?

I am currenlty making a helmet, and I would like to have something engraved in a weird place, UV bump mapping seems my only option.

UVMap the texture, then add a New Material and add the same Image as a Texture. Change the mapping from ORCO to UV, turn COL off and NOR on for the Bump map. do the same for Spec etc…
