UV calculation error - "active face not selected"

Hello,

I am fairly new to blender. I am working through this tutorial for SL sculpted prims:

As written, I can complete the tutorial without problems. But if I use a default sphere exported from MAX 3D, either as a 3DS or .obj, I get an error “active face not selected” when I perform the “UV calculation | Follow active (quads) | none” step. I have double checked, I did RMB select a face and hit “A” twice.

The only difference I see is that the convert NURBS to mesh (ALT-C) overlays a rectangular mesh, where as the 3DS and .obj uses a trangular mesh. Not sure if this is a factor.

The goal is to use blender to import 3DS objects and bake UV maps for SL. Any help is appreciated. Thanks,
