UV Smart Project in Blender 2.67

Hey guys,

I am working on a Kimber pistol and have some issues unwrapping with UV Smart Project. I split the screen into two viewports - one has the 3D model and the other has UV Editor open. The island in UV Editor is laid out horizontal and not vertical like I have seen in tutorials. I join all the pieces of the model, switch to Edit Mode and select everything. I hit U to bring up Unwrap panel and select UV Smart Project. I leave the settings as is in panel and hit OK. Nothing happens. The model doesn’t unwrap. I tried marking seams and unwrapping that way with the same result. Nothing happens.

I have two models - one with no modifiers and one with subdivision surface modifiers. Same result with both. Any tips on what I am forgetting would be appreciated.
