I was moving some points with G hot key. And got into the mode where circle around an area showed up and every thing within the circle started move? How did I end up using a G with area select? How do I get out of it?

down the 3D-view, there also is a yellow double-circle. If that’s grey, proportional editing is off, if only the outer circle is yellow, you’re in “Connected only”-mode.
And you can rescale the influence size with mouse-wheel.
Also, there are different types of btushes.
This feature is very nice, remember it for later, when you need it
