Vertex Gradient is All or Nothing

When I assign a vertex group to an armature, everything from red to cyan are affected the same amount. As long as it is not dark blue, it is affected 100% by the assigned bone. How do I get it to recognize the gradient and affect the vertices accordingly?

I made a mistake in the title, I meant Weight Paint

Assign your vertices to more then one group. If the vertex only belongs to one vertex group, it will move 100% with that bone, regardless of it’s value.
