VFX Help

Hi,

I am trying to create a sci-fi HUD element which has depth and animation on it. How would I render this out to be used for a live action footage clip?

Any help or good tutorials or resources would be great this is my first time using blender for something like this.

It depends on whether you want a flat, 2D (orthographic) view:

Or a more, 3D (perspective) and realistic depth view:

Perspective can become tiresome to handle, especially for simple things such as icons. However, some icons require 3D elements.

Ultimately, I’d suggest picking 2D or 3D based on what style and art you’re going to be creating. 2D might work in some cases, 3D another.

Here is a good, simple tutorial on making HUD elements in Blender:

Here is a more complex, but still good tutorial:

Thank you so much for the prompt response. It is for alive action shot of a hand held scanner where i have been tasked to put a HUD element onto it. If that provides better context. Thank you so much for the tutorials!

Since your handheld scanner may using an arm model as well as the scanner, I’d suggest using the 3D approach.

I don’t understand what you mean by “alive action”, perhaps you mean “live action” aka a dynamic sequence?

Thank you again for the reply. Oh yeah i forgot the space. Definetly meant live action. So would either of the tutorials work for this purpose?

The first tutorial I shared shows how to animate your HUD model by rotating it slightly. This probably isn’t what you’re looking for though.

What you’re looking for is a, slow or fast zoomed in sequence I think. This can be accomplished multiple ways.

Whether by animating your scene camera’s location, or by animating your camera’s focal length, or even animating your model’s location itself. Basically, you’ll need to decide which method you like best and fits your personal preference and taste.
