Video Editing. Can I use an animated mask for a picture in picture?

Noob video editing compositing question I expect.
I have made a mask which follows a character across the scene.
So far so good!
What I would like to do is have that mask be a (stationary) picture in picture containing its moving content.
I’ve been looking unsuccessfully for a way to render just the masked content as a movie clip.
A nudge in the right direction would be great, thanks!

Well, a mask is just a black and white image, so any reason you can’t override any object material with a flat pure white colour and then render it all on a solid black background?

Video Sequence Editor ll be your friend you can use it as an alpha inside.

Thanks for the lead, I am still studying it so maybe its the solution I’m looking for. Likely I’m not seeing it since I am not yet familiar with all of Blender’s excellent features.
The problem I’m getting to grips with is the animated nature of the mask.
I’m not seeing a way to isolate the masked area and make a movie clip out of it.
If I could do that then I imagine it would be straightforward enough to drop the clip into a PIP using the sequencer.
However at the moment its a 200 frame moving target which was created in Movie Clip Editor, Mask mode.
Thanks again for your suggestion, I will give it a try.

Thanks, this is an excellent mask tutorial from which I have picked up some additional tips on creating an animated mask.
This is where I am atm. “So far so good!”
I will study ‘Alpha Inside’ as a way to make the mask stationary so I can place it in a PIP.
Thanks again!

You can also use tracked mask in node compositing inside blender.
