View Layers, AO/contact shadows?

I have a scene with two characters in a scene, and run out of VRAM during rendering. I’m trying to solve it by separating each character and the ground/background into separate View Layers, and merging them with the compositor.

I get close to the desired result, but I’m missing the contact shadows on the ground (from AO in the ground material). The fact that they don’t reflect off each other or cast shadows on each other is not bothering me.

I’ve simplified my scene as shown below. Left side is when rendering all objects in a single layer, and right side is multiple View Layers merged.

The only solution I can think of is to include meshes of the soles of their feet in the background layer, but it’s not very practical. Any other ideas?
