We are looking for a visual artist to work on the stage design of a theater production based on visuals and music.
A music-only version of this performance has been shown at the Wallen Festival in Amsterdam, and took place on the 23rd of June 2024 at the Spendor concert hall (video of the performance: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IJZ7ZCiuXds).
The project
(This picture is an attempt to clarify what we mean).
The project is a theater piece on the topic of the importance of being kind to each other. There are six characters - some are digital (projected), some are human actors. The digital characters are projected on 3-D shapes on stage. They morph and change to serve the story line and as a result of interactions with the human characters. There is live music by singers and an orchestra on stage. The live music not only shapes particular emotional states but also carries part of the storyline.
We are interested in the creation of a stage design which not only supports the story but creates seamless and natural interactions and transitions between the digital and the physical worlds. Our storyline is created so that it can maintain the unity of the two worlds, and we are looking at creative ways for the stage design to work in the same direction. We would like to create a natural and powerful emotional experience for the viewer where the stage (and its design) brings plot, characters and music, distributed in both digital and physical forms, into unity.
More concretely, we are particularly interested in what forms of stage design can enhance the interaction between the live actors or live musicians in relation to the digital representations.
Required Skills
We are looking for someone that can
- design the stage, including the shapes on which the digital characters will be projected
- create interactive projections.
We have already formulated some ideas, but the artist would be free to choose their own design directions in discussion with us.
Our ideas
Our ideas so far are:
- “shapes” are composed of building blocks that the projections can manipulate to change the overall result. Think for example to a 3-D mosaic where the tiles are 3-D objects that can change pattern by the projections.
- The projections should be interactive, so after designing the shapes, these would need to be mapped and projected upon with a tool that also allow interactivity (a combination of Blender and Unity/Unreal, or TouchDesigner, VVVV, others).
We have the storyline, a basic script and the music already written (might be extended based on the visuals).
Financial part
To be discussed with the artist.
