Back in 2004, I had a contract gig writing C and VB code for a conveyor system modification in the returned merchandise department at a huge warehouse. Popular items would be dropped into bins, and it was one of my assignments to notify the workers that a bin had reached a “carton quantity”, and reassign the drop bin to an empty bin.
Meanwhile, at home, I was writing an animation studio in DirectX.
I dreamed of creating a “live” data display that would show the bottle-necks as the product moved from place to place. It was to be a 3D view of the warehouse floor with bar graphs that would grow as the backups happened.
Thanks for listening.
