Voldemort Sculpt WIP Advice needed !!!!

Hi guys, so I have recently discovered sculpting using Blender. I have been using Sculptris to do most of my sculpting but it does not allow very detailed sculpts. This is my attempt at Voldemort. As I said any advice from any of you more advanced sculptors would be greatly appreciated !

Latest update !

Looks pretty good! Certainly recognizable, though I’d like to see more angles. The eye sockets feel a little too deep and too wide but the lack of actual eyes may be throwing my off there. The laugh lines stay too deep too far down, which makes his mouth look more protruding than it is. I think your eye sockets should angle downwards more; Voldemort (or Ralph Fiennes at at least) has a very “sad” face; It’s part of the appeal of the character. Ears should be more pointy and “elvish”, and I think the chin and temples are a little to lumpy. Finally, the lips though be much thinner (especially the bottom one) and the upper lip needs a small downwards point in the middle. Finally, the nostrils need to angle inwards more.

I’ve mocked my suggestions up here, original on the left:

Hopefully that seems useful to you, look forward to seeing how it goes!

Hi thank you for the advice it is greatly appreciated ! I have done some tweaks and here is my latest ! I have added eyes and just played around with the shaping ! Check it out !

The addition of the eyes really helps. So far its a really good sculpt

The reference is a little dark so i may be a little off here. But the crease around the mouth to the nose looks a little too deep and the angle of where the crease turns towards the nose is a little lower than the reference. The spacing of the nostrils is a little close, the crease between the lower lip and chin is a little too sharp. and the area under the eye is a bit too deep. I figure you are using symmetry to sculpt so the brow creases at the center are uniform, the reference they are not. But in that same area its either slightly too sunken in or the right (his right, our left) eye brow area is protruding slightly too far

Hope this helps, keep up the good work

Thank you for the advice. Everything you have pointed out I have changed, except for the smile crease at the moment. I really appreciate the encouraging comments as well ! Here is the latest :

Hi guys here is my latest update ! I have plenty of work to do on this so I would like as much advice as possible please ! Don’t be shy !

Looks really good! I think the redness around the eyes needs to be a little smaller (the reference picture shows that it’s very tight around the eyes and I think the eyes look a little dull - a bit more shine might help; he seems listless instead of soulful. Finally the nose is a problem; it’s very obvious that the holes don’t go anywhere. The nostrils should actually be openings instead of grooves. But the materials work on the skin looks great!

This is looking good  I think the nose (well…what used to be his nose :stuck_out_tongue: ) could be slightly narrower, and the slits made a little smaller/deeper. I also agree that the red around the eyes is slightly too strong, and also that the eyes are a little dull. Quite a bit of Voldamort’s menace is in his facial expressions, and thats going to be the most difficult thing to get right I think…But you are off to a solid start, and I look forward to seeing this develop!

p.s also. bring the ears in a little

Hi guys ! Thanks for the comments and advice it is greatly appreciated. I have taken on board most of what has been said. However, I am struggling with the nose  I can’t seem to get it right at the moment and have tried several types but none of them have looked particularly good ! If any advice can be offered it would be greatly appreciated !

Can we see a wire or a close up on the nostrils? That might help. Also, I think you might have gone too busy here; voldemort does have a lot of weird cracks and veins in his skin but you’ve lost that cave salamander pallidness now. Try dialing it back a bit?

Hi TidyPachiderm !

I don’t have a wireframe because I have used a multi-res modifier ! What areas would you suggest dialling back ?

Very impressive work.

There is some light and shadow on the nose in your reference image that may be of help to sculpt the volumes you are missing here. The lighter part are like arrow shaped and I dont get it the same way in your model, the arrow shap is sharper on the reference.

I guess you are awar of the skin error on the top of the ear but are not working on this part curently.

Thanks for the comment Androol !

I have been doing some work on it today and I decided to give myself a bit of a break by putting together his clothing. I have not applied any textures to it as of yet. I am also going to model his snake Nagini tomorrow as well !

Here is my latest effort :

Hi guys here is my latest update. I have decided to take volume scatter out of the world settings because it kept on making everything grainy. If anyone has any suggestions with lighting and the volume scatter option it would be greatly appreciated. I still have plenty of work to do on this. I need to fix a number of things (ears, texture paint, eyes and bump map on robe) but I think it is slowly coming together. I am going to take a break from this for a couple of days and start working on the snake Nagini. Anyways hope you guys like so far and I look forward to hearing your feedback !

This is looking fantastic so far

Although, i think voldomorts lips have slightly more volume, and are also more of a red tone.
his “cupid’s bow” is also slightly wider, and shallower.
have a look at this image to see what i mean -

Make the ears smaller and the head a little bit more narrower.

Thank you for the advice ! Here is my latest update :

those eyes really make him 10th more creepy. Beautiful work. Is this going to be animation ready? Cause it would be so freaky to see him just move a little kinda like the posters and photos in the movie. Especially if initially it looked like a still image and then he turned his head and looked right at you.
