Walkman (1979)

I’ve modeled, textured and rendered the original Walkman from 1979, while testing out the Blender 4.3 beta. The Oren–Nayar reflectance model for rough surfaces makes a huge difference, particularly for the headphone’s ear pads in these renders. All materials are procedural, except for an image texture with the labels and symbols.

Below are the renders that I originally posted. I have since updated the post with a little more progress, but I’m leaving the originals here for the record.

I miss these, never had a Walkman, just the cheep clones, but I’ve seen it close and your render looks very accurate to me! Well done!

Those headphones look amazing. Great job.

Such a great detailed looking render, but I believe it would look even better if you color graded it, as it seems a bit log footage-ish. Love the texture of the earpads!

Sweet youngster memories!

Uh… I mean… I’m too young to know this!

If you remember the ‘pencil trick’… you’re definitely too old :stuck_out_tongue:

But very nice work. :+1:
The new shader additions really seems to make a lot of difference.

And Sony really made all the cool audio gadgets in those days.

Fantastic work. Cycles shading quality has definitely improved a lot.

Was about to mention it. Don’t forget the hexagon pencil to rewind and save those precious batteries.

And repeatedly adjusting the azimuth on your computer’s data cassette recorder, hoping it will adjust the alignment just that bit to get rid of that darn load error.

Uhm… that’s nothing to do with walkmans. You’re talking of a different ‘beast’. :stuck_out_tongue:

Well … (koff, koff …) does anyone remember when CLOAD was a magazine?

(Bonus-points if you still remember what CLOAD even stood for. Double-points if you remember the “Kansas City standard” – and why it was so awful.)

It was also a (reasonably) portable recorder with the same cassettes, so it’s fairly related. :slightly_smiling_face:

Fantastic.
