I personally like the mood and the textures if this image. The newer ones seem glossy, 3D but not in a pleasant way. I like this one :d
I appreciate the comment, and tend to agree. I am finishing up the boat to place in the distance, and then will try for a more finished look, similar to the one you are referencing.
Got the ‘rigging elements’ of the Yawl in place, and I think it is done? Now to place it in the correct scene.
I had mentioned that I took a ‘detour’ to create the Yawl, but currently, it is intended to be just a prop on the horizon of the Dream Scene illustration. Here is a more final look at that illustration, with the boat in place. I will undoubtedly come back to this in the future, but for now, it is complete enough that I can move on to other pages needing attention.
After assistance from another forum member, I am able to have the boat ‘heel-over’ correctly in the wind. I also added the young boy to steer the craft, as it looked ‘empty’ without a person.
I had created this Yawl, as a background asset, and have placed it correctly, but, upon a nights sleep and dreams, it has been ‘upgraded’ to be a possible candidate to be included as an extra image illustration in the proposed book, we’ll see… with dream clouds. White background for placement illustration.
I have returned to the cover image for the book illustration, after feedback that the ‘boy’ was not significant enough in earlier versions, to which I agreed. I have moved him closer to the camera, along with companion ‘cat.’ It also now includes the ‘boat’ which I had completed for the Dream Scene, for visual continuity and fun. All elements built in Blender, passes then composited in photo software with some filters applied. Mid image is where the spine of the book is expected, night on the back, sunshine on the cover.
Just for context, here is one of the interior pages of the proposed book, with page specific illustration in place. After generating a whole lot of individual images I had wanted to place some of these to confirm the general sense of where this is supposed to be going. Encouraging to see some of the elements in place on the different pages. This one uses the ‘daytime’ side of the cover along with a ‘solo’ appearance of ‘the Crow.’
Another day, another ‘asset.’ I had created this bi-plane years ago as a part of a project with my brother on a promotion video he developed as part of the Ithaca Museum for the Scout bi-plane, produced at a factory in that town back in WWI 1918. I now need it as a prop for some of the scenes, both in the sky, and as a model in the boy’s bedroom. This render is composited here as a reference, as it will be small background object mostly
Revisited the cover, again. Creative review, I usually note ‘things’ that need adjustment, a bit of the moving target. I was able to get some of the ‘night’ lighting back, and adjusted the posture of the boy, and happier about the moon and fireflies now. Now I am starting on some of the other pages, overdue. Multiple render passes, overlapped and composited together for effect.
I have shifted to a different scene, which will be the focus of several illustrations, it is the ‘boys bedroom’ with its clutter of drawings and models. This is first draft of the idea, certainly subject to further revisions.
The boy’s room, v2, further renders and compositing of layers to final effect. Still lower resolution for render time constraints, I will push it up when it feels more settled. Proportional adjustments of several elements, tweaking of shaders, etc. It’s a process.
Further adjustments, added a hat, different label on skateboard, shifted lighting. It is a ‘process’ in which I generate a pile of passes, both cycles and Eevee, Chalk, Toon Line, then composite them in layers of varied intensity and mode of combining. This was also done a full resolution 200dpi, tho this on screen version is sampled down for posting. Ready to move on to the next page?? Still trying to finalize the cover, as feedback convinced me to ‘scale’ the boy down in this scene, which requires the same proportions in the other scenes. As I said, it is a process, in which I let the image ‘talk to me.’
Just to give an idea of how this is supposed to look when placed in a page with supporting images, Here is this page with image in place with text. On to the next page, for the moment, until I come back upon reflection??
Time for a new render. This is a second illustration of the bedroom for a different page in the story, as the boy goes to sleep, wishing for the needed components to make some wings. Slow process, composing the elements, render passes, then compositing the passes in different modes to make the image.
Another day, another render. I had done preliminary sketches for these pages, and the one for this page, had a tighter focus on the boy, not so distant, so I have revised the camera angle and distance, moving elements around in the new composition. I think it works better, as he is more the focus, which is the point of the story. Feedback is always welcome, as I move along to the next illustration.
This is the third scene taking place in the bedroom, as the young boy makes parachutes, kites, and model airplanes, all my favorite activities at this age. A couple of edits and re-rendered.
I was not satisfied with the ‘boy,’ after repeated placements and review. Since he appears on every page, I went back into modeling and shaping, and a different rig setup. Also, he gets ‘cargo’ pants for detail. This is the first bedroom scene being re-done, and I will probably re-do the other scenes with the new character. I also added some details, birds in the window and several elements moved.
Revisited the cover, again, after revising the ‘boy’ model, changed head and rigging. Creative review, I usually note ‘things’ that need adjustment, a bit of the moving target. The boy, has been changed in posture, size and anatomy. Happier about the moon and fireflies now. Multiple render passes, overlapped and composited together for effect. Bare in mind, this is the cover, so the ‘night’ side is on the back of the book, with the page split coming in the middle of this image.
It has been awhile . … Problem solving the best rigging solution for birds, to allow the wings to fold reasonably at side. Tried three(3) different rigging solutions, multiple times, investigated others attempts, finally settled on a mixed solution of Auto Rig Pro and Easy Lattice for final adjustments with ShapeKeys. It’s close, enough to move on?
Also, now including LANPR lines on these two examples, tho I still want more control of thickness variations.
