Weight painting in 2.8

Is it not implemented yet or am I just stupid? The 2.7x way of doing it doesn’t work, because you can’t leave the pose mode on while switching to the model that you want to weight paint.

You are not stupid. Selecting a bone in pose mode to paint corresponding weight on mesh is not working, anymore.
Because of multi-editing of objects in the same mode, the way rigging was done in 2.79 has to be, at least adapted to 2.8. If it does not mean completely rethought.

Xray for armature was restored 4 days ago. But it is useless for rigging.

You can still avoid bone selection and select vertex group in weight paint mode instead.
But 3D View is not refreshing as it should. So, you have to force update of viewport by enabling/disabling face selection masking before painting.

Rigging in 2.8alpha is currently far to be a smooth workflow.

Hi, you have to go to Edit -> “uncheck” Lock Object Mode -> profit!

Doesn’t seem to work in old files but does in new ones. Probably bugged, thanks.

Could you please provide a screen cap on that? Thanks.

here, hope it will help you

Thanks for posting this! Why is this a default behavior, I wonder?

Cheers,
Steve

I just downloaded the latest blender 2.8 today (01-04-19). I’m in pose mode but can’t select a mesh to parent.

Lock object mode is unchecked and still can’t.

Any other reason I would not be able to select a mesh in pose mode? or is this still a 2.8 development thing?

Sorry, its a little bit late to answer.
If the problem is already there, maybe check if the mesh you want to select is in a collection who are locked.
If it doesn’t work, it’s a little bit strange despite the fact you unchecked Lock Object mode.

Bump.
This new weight-painting system in 2.8 is difficult comparing to 2.7x version

Yes, there are profiles that you can use but Its limited to 4.
There is no quick-switch.
There are brushes to select and modes that you can select, but most of them are pointless(?)

Also, I’d like to point out that I cannot find “MIRROR X” in Weight Painting mode.

did anyone ever find “mirror x”?

Hi,

In the top right corner of the 3D window, you can modify options (x axis mirror editing) or do some symmetry for brush only.

As of right now, the weight painting system just SUCKS. I’m sorry, but it’s true. It’s much worse than before.
Currently the workflow is : select armature in object mode, select object to be painted, then ctrl+click the bone you want to paint weight for. If you have multiple objects needing weight-painting (such as shoulder pads, head, armor, sword etc for a single character - I often split them like that so as not to accidentally mix weights between adjacent parts) tough luck: you’ll have to exit out of the current one first, then do step 1 all over.
On top of that, now you can’t simply and quickly Ctrl+Tab in an out of the WP mode. You now have the TEDIOUS pie menu that adds a whole another step into the equation and makes the workflow plain uncomfortable. Yes, I can add a single-step shortcut for the WeightPaint mode but that shortcut doesn’t EXIT out of it, so it’s near-useless.
On top of that, modes are mutually restrictive in terms of selection now, so you can’t select objects that can’t be weightpainted (i.e. bones, empties) while weightpainting.
On top of THAT, weight-painting in wireframe mode is impossible in 2.8. In 2.8, they’ve got that lattice-like see-through where you can’t view through OTHER (not currently selected) objects while weight-painting, and the patchwork “seethrough” effect is just jarring and uncomfortable visually.

THANK you. I’ve been working along with an older (2.7x) rigging course and was wondering how in heck the instructor was doing what he was doing.

The weights does not seem to update:

One can tell that I have amplified the area from green to yellow but nothing happens? I want a soft affection from the bones, and not a steep.
