weird smoothed model

hi, guys…I model something which is intended to be a bomb (you know, the bomb that has a sphere like shape and a rope to detonate it). However, after I set it smooth, the rope part becomes strange as seen in the attached image. Why is this? Thanks in advance.

Select all vertices (or edges, faces) in the model, then press Ctrl-N. It also works by just selecting the weird-looking parts, but it’s easier to do A>>Ctrl-N.

I have tried it many times but it’s not working for me.:frowning:

I want to attach the blend file so that you guys can play with it, but it seems not allowing attachment other than image files. How to attach the blend then?

Do a search for non-manifold. There is also a script (in Edit Mode select Mesh–>Scripts–>Clean Mesh) that might help you fix your mesh.

Good luck.

Great!..The script thing didn’t work as expected, but at least I know what is the problem. After the mesh cleaning, it is clear that it is my fault when extruding it. The inside part is like a fan, no wonder it becomes weird. Haha…really my bad. Thank you, it helped so much.

Ah…you should’ve just extruded the circle outline (from the top of the bomb), without those inner faces. You have to erase those inner faces, along with the inside edges (the ones that make it look like a fan) to avoid more of those artifacts.
