What is "Locking" ?

What exactly is being Locked? This is a little perplexing to me.

When first adding an object , you can “lock” the scale but entering any dimension for that object, the scale value gets overwritten (at least while working in Imperial units).

What is “Locked” good for if its ignored? - noting; however, once the Ctrl+A apply scale has been done, the value returns back to 1.

Where in Blender 2.66 is Apply > Rotation & Scale offered besides this clever shortcut Ctrl+A?

Thanks for any reply.

Here:

The scaling of the object in Object Mode, Pose Mode, etc.

This isn’t intended as a modeling-stage tool but as something to keep animators (maybe even yourself) from messing with the scale once the modeling is done. When you have an object’s scale locked while it’s attached to an armature, for instance, it will keep the object from scaling during animation.

Thanks guys - both replies much appreciated. - Kelly
