What is the best way to create 2D Mockups from 3D models?

Hello, how are you ?

I currently model 3D objects and then use rendered images to create 2D mockups for applying photos and product arts using Photoshop (by another team, which I’m not part of, my part is modeling and preparing mockups, these mockups are used by this other team).

As for the 3D objects everyone here is used to it.
Regarding the 2D mockups I demonstrate some similar examples in the following link: https://yellowimages.com/all/objects/.

The process I developed to create our 2D mockups was as follows:

  • 1 - First I model the object in Blender, and position the object within a “simple studio lighting” like those used for still photography. The studio I created by following these steps: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9zA_MwBAGv0

  • 2 - Then I apply a Material to the object that I think is the best for this type of use (the setting is in the image below).

  • 3 - I render the images with the object in the positions I need (these rendered images will be used to create the mockups.)

  • 4 - With the rendered images, I prepare mockups in Photoshop.

  • 5 - In photoshop, I follow the step-by-step link below to create mockups (separating shadows and highlights into different layers): https://viki.si/t-shirt-mockup/.

These are my current Material settings:

Currently mockups are coming out with good quality, but renderings are taking a long time, and I believe it is because of the material chosen. Another problem is the difference in mockups that should be some glossy, some matte, some metal, etc. Each “Real” object has a kind of glow in the package. Another problem is mockups where the object has all or some transparent faces, such as this one: https://yellowimages.com/stock/plastic-bag-with-bok-choy-mockup-48041/.

My main question is about the materials applied to the objects.

My questions for you are:

  • Is this the best process for this kind of breeding?
  • What is the best Blender Material setting I can use to create these mockups?
  • Is it possible to improve rendering time only by changing the settings of my material?
  • What are the best Object Materials settings: glossy, matte, metallized and translucent? Are there any tips or forums related to this process of creating 2D Mockups from 3D objects and Blender renderings?

I would be very grateful if you could help me with these issues, and I believe from your guidance I would have new questions to take with you.

Thank you all in advance.

I don’t think you are doing much wrong with your workflow. Sure you need the step with Photoshop? The linked guide looks like the same can be achieved in the compositor.

I wonder, though, what it is about long rendering time. If it only happens with transparent materials it might be caustics. Are you using ‘Transmission’ or ‘Alpha’ to achieve transparency? For other materials there should be no reason for unusual amounts of noise.

This kind of render is slow? What’s your hardware?

I also agree with omgold, the photoshop process could be done much more efficiently in a compositor (blenders one, natron, davinci resolve, nuke… ). You set the nodes once, and then every image will need only minor adjustments or even you could batch process a bunch of them.
