What makes F1 F1?

I have seen at least one comment to the spate of F1 Challenge entries about F1 requirements (“ya know, that really should be an open-wheel configuration”) and I want to get the obvious statement out of the way: showing up at an F1 event with a jet powered flying machine isn’t going to work either. It is about imagining what it is going to be and just about anything goes.

Originally, I was thinking about an electric-powered F1 car but … could you imagine going to a whisper quiet F1 race? (“Hey, buddy, shut up so I can hear the cars!”) Boring. The used to worry about fuel fires, now they worry about lithium-ion batteries exploding.

I don’t really want to climb onto the jet-powered flying thing bandwagon for essentially the same reason. Air racing events and air shows are great but could they ever approach the visceral sound of a V8 shifting at 20,000RPM down a long straightaway? Just about anything goes in this challenge but spectators would still have to show up.

I’m thinking about going retro. Maybe a normally aspirated machine with a specially tailored clone of Ralf Schumacher for a driver. Sponsors would all be genetic engineering corporations. Jeez I’m getting old.

As for the competition, other than it needing to be open cockpit, there are no other design rules. I know I have been one of the people that suggested others look at an open wheel design, but not as a rule. Open wheel cars have a sleeker more agile appearance, which is what I think of when I think of an F1 car (IRL). Many of the flying F1 entries have the same sleek body proportions you would expect in a wheeled F1 car. In the end it is all about what looks right to the artist. We all comment and crit based on our own experiences and likes and dislikes. Don’t let me or anyone else stop you from making your F1 the way you want it. Considering a Unicycle won two years ago, definitely anything goes for the F1 challenge.

You know, the open cockpit really is a hell of a rule. It makes ‘action’ shots more difficult to pull off because you have to make a driver to go along with the car. Not that it’s a bad thing, really… but it does add to the challenge - especially since with multiple vehicles in a shot you’d need multiple drivers (or at least multiple skins for one model)… it adds up :stuck_out_tongue:

I still dunno if I’ll keep my entry going… I was really excited about doing the F1 thing until my HD exploded on me right before it started, and now I dunno… I seem to have lost my drive to model after losing so much work. I haven’t really done much at all since the failure aside from the occasional doodle… I’ve got an idea of what I want to do and a decent start, but I’ve lost my motivation.

Someone needs to invent a pill for this… screw restless leg syndrome…

@DichotomyMatt: The unicycle was not only cool; I would go and watch them race. I am being a little cynical but I appreciate that the F1 challenge is more of an artistic competition.

What is changing in F1 has been mostly about safety which eithre restricts top speeds or is only interesting from an engineering viewpoint (i.e., active suspension.) The F1 challenge is interesting because you don’t really have to worry about the safety aspect. Really, would you want to be in a high-speed unicycle crash? OK, the driver does have a pretty cool, uh, shell.

@Squiggly_P: get back on the horse. There is plenty of time to get something good in the F1 challenge. There is no time for Blender ennui.

I invented a pill exactly for these types of situations. All that is needed is for scientists to make it real.

sniff There is something beautiful about using an application to create a solution for the anxiety of using that application. Seriously, does it come without the child-proof cap? Does it dissolve quickly in coffee?

@Squiggly_P: your F1 entry should be sponsored by graphixz.

I don’t think it would be a good idea to remove the child-proof cap, but I am thinking of creating a child’s version of gráphixz®. Something like: gráphixz® for kids with fun and tasty geometry shaped chewables, maybe in the future. I don’t think it will make your coffee taste good.
