what's the diference: bump and displace map?

Hello there,
As in the title I’m a bit confused about what is the difference between a bump and a displacement map. I know that for a displacement you need a high poly mesh to see the most realistic effect. And I thought at first that Bump map should work in a similar way as normal map and that is faking.
So do I need a high poly mesh for a bump map?
Because there is no way I could achieve any nice effect with bump map so far.
cheers folks

Simplistically, a bump map looks as though the objects surface has been displaced while a displacement map actually does displace the surface mesh (hence the need for high resolution for fine detail). Displacement maps need high resolution, bump maps don’t
